The UK Hiring Market Has Changed. Has Your Recruitment Strategy?

The UK hiring market is changing.

Vacancies have fallen, candidate competition has increased and technology is reshaping the skills businesses need. Yet finding the right person remains far from straightforward.

ONS figures estimate that UK vacancies fell to 702,000 between June and August 2026, the lowest level since early 2021. On paper, that should make recruitment easier for employers.

But more candidates doesn't necessarily mean more choice.

More applications. Not necessarily more suitable candidates.

Employers may now receive significantly more applications for a vacancy, but volume and suitability are very different things.

The challenge is identifying people with the right combination of experience, capability, judgement and potential — particularly for specialist and senior positions.

This means defining what the organisation genuinely needs before going to market is becoming increasingly important.

Skills are changing too

AI, automation and wider business transformation are changing roles across the UK.

This isn't limited to technology. Compliance, finance, legal, business change and leadership roles are all evolving as organisations adopt new systems, respond to regulation and rethink how work gets done.

Employers therefore need to consider not only:

“Can this person do the job today?”

but also:

“Can they succeed in where this role is going next?”

Candidates need to think differently too

In a more competitive market, sending the same CV to dozens of vacancies is unlikely to be enough.

Candidates need to demonstrate more than responsibilities. Employers want to understand impact.

What changed because of your work? What problem did you solve? What did you improve, deliver, protect or enable?

That story can be far more powerful than a long list of duties.

The right connection still matters

Technology can make recruitment faster. AI can help process information. Data can support better decisions.

But recruitment ultimately remains about people.

For employers, that means understanding what you genuinely need and recognising the right person when you find them.

For professionals, it means understanding not only where your experience has taken you — but where it can take you next.

The market may have changed. The importance of making the right connection hasn't.
